Shipping Analytics is a forward-looking initiative launched by the Department of Port Management and Shipping at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. It brings together distinguished experts with academic and professional experience in the maritime and trade sectors, aiming to bridge research excellence with market relevance.
Vision & Mission
The vision of the initiative is to establish a robust interface between academic knowledge and the practical demands of the shipping industry. Its mission is to produce high-quality research outputs that contribute to informed decision-making and strategic foresight in maritime transport. At its core, Shipping Analytics aspires to empower stakeholders—from port authorities and shipping firms to investors and policymakers—by delivering timely, data-driven analyses that support the transition toward resilient and sustainable maritime business practices. It also serves as a platform for cultivating young researchers, offering undergraduate students the opportunity to actively engage in real-world projects under academic supervision.
Key Objectives
The core objectives of the initiative include the continuous monitoring, analysis, and interpretation of maritime market data such as macroeconomic indicators, freight rate trends, cargo volumes, and port performance metrics. By synthesizing these insights, Shipping Analytics aims to offer actionable intelligence and market narratives that assist industry actors in navigating current challenges and seizing emerging opportunities. A further objective is to enhance transparency and accessibility in maritime data, contributing to a more informed and inclusive shipping ecosystem. Finally, the initiative plays a critical educational role by mentoring undergraduate students and equipping them with the analytical skills and sector-specific expertise necessary for future careers in shipping and logistics.
Signature Output: Quarterly Shipping Market Report
A key output of the initiative is the Quarterly Shipping Market Analysis Report, produced since 2024 by the Department’s research team. This report is prepared by undergraduate students under the academic guidance and responsibility of Assistant Professor Michael Tsatsaronis. It provides a concise, visually enhanced, and methodologically robust overview of the latest trends in maritime markets, including sectoral performance, freight dynamics, and geopolitical or regulatory developments impacting global shipping.
